Over the centuries, many saints and sages have been drawn to Arunachala – the holy hill at Thiruvannamalai in what is today the state of Tamil Nadu. Ramana Maharshi lived in Virupaksha, the Om-shaped cave high up on this hill, from 1899 – 1916. Talking about the sanctity of Arunachala, he said that while other holy places like Kailas, Kashi and Chidambaram were sacred because they are the abodes of Shiva – Arunachala is Shiva Himself.
A verse from the Arunachala Mahatmyam says: Arunachala is a secret kshetra that bestows jnana (Self-knowledge) ... Yet, to those few who seek jnana – Arunachala, through some means or the other, always makes itself known.
